[Service Review] Part 2 of What I Learnt From Bridgette Raes' Virtual Closet Editing Session

Hi ladies! :D

I know it's been a while, there's been a lot of things going on in the past month, including some national holidays, and job transition preparations... But you didn't think I'd leave things unfinished right? ^__^~!!

OK. So it's all been a while since I worked with Ms Raes, so I'm going to share in 3 parts, what I couldn't share in my previous post.

Today's Contents
1. What I Learnt about My Body Type
2. What I Learnt about Accessorizing
3. How I've Dressed Since Our Consultation

* * *
1. What I Learnt about My Body Type

caption: What I sent to Bridgette before our session, entire body from the front

I actually sent her all 3 sides of me, front, back, and side, but I'm not ready to disclose that much of me yet... :P I have something of a muffin top nearing a beer belly from the side view... So, that's something I'll be working on soon...

For many of you ladies, you probably have done all kinds of tests and quizzes to figure out your body shape. I certainly have tried. I've done free ones from various blogs, from fashion books, as well as a paid service, such as My Private Stylist.

Sadly, none of them really helped me figure out what to make of my body type or shape. The body is a 3 dimensional form, which in reality 'moves' and what we typically see is a body in motion, making it actually a 4D experience. This is the visual trickery that may need to be considered in the future, ie. 'How' a person moves may be entirely different from how they appear in photos or in a still 3D form...

Anywho, I digress...

My biggest frustration over the many years I'd been on this 'Style Quest Journey' is that, while my 'Vertical Line' isn't so bad for an Asian body, learning how to dress for the shape I am was tougher over the years, as I gained weight in the middle.

In many of the quizzes I took, women's body shapes usually fall into 3~4 camps, if you don't get TOO detailed into it. Most give you the Hour Glass, Rectangle, Top Heavy Triangle, and the Bottom Heavy Triangle. And yes, they've named our gorgeous bodies all kinds of fruits, stationery items, geometric shapes, and alphabet letters, but seriously, all that naming doesn't really get you that far...

To give you the final verdict from Bridgette's shrew eye, and based on the various photos I've sent to her, my biggest problem was 3 fold.

1. My shoulders are big. They need to be addressed. Wearing boxy clothes make them look bigger, and until I took photos, I had no idea exactly HOW BIG they looked from the back...

2. Short waisted. I'm short waisted. Despite how nice and longish my legs are for an Asian body, this causes lots of visual problems. And honest to god, I did not know how to make my short but existent waist work its magic... :P

3. Balance. In one of the photos I sent to her, I belted a sheer blouse, and wore skinny jeggings. I really had not considered it as a problem, but Bridgette pointed out how my body looked like a block of cheese, a wedge shaped one, with my tiny feet making a point at the bottom, with my BIG SHOULDERS making me look like a triangle... o.O;;; I took a moment to take in what she was saying, and it reminded me of how my Mom always said things about me, 'You look so sharp, too sharp...' etc. in the past. Maybe it's the personal preference thing, I honestly did not think I looked weird in that photo, but I could see her point of view. It basically made me look very a) unbalanced, ready to topple over, and b) it truly made my shoulders look Egyptian big...
Caption: The picture in question...

Well, Bridgette pointed out that the length of my layering tank tee was also not helping me... You see, these are the things one needs to work out, while creating outfits... I need to buy longer blouses to wear with my skinny jeggings! :)

I also asked Bridgette whether she thought I was an hourglass shape or not, because depending upon the quiz, some said I was, and others said I wasn't! She basically affirmed what was true; I am and I'm not.

If you do body shape quizzes that focus more on voluptuousness, and your 3D figure form, your bust size, will determine whether you are or you're not an hourglass. Going with that, I'll never be an hourglass. My bust is too small to be an hourglass shape.

But if you're taking quizzes that use your shoulder-waist-hip ratio, as some quizzes DO, I AM an hourglass. But one that has a short ribcage and short waist.

See, these are the reasons why you just can't use those quizzes to figure out how to make the best of your bodyshape!!! You are too unique! Your body isn't some 'Theory'! It is an actuality... and I am so glad, that this *F* mystery is finally solved!

I really learnt to see how my body looked... Not how it used to be 10, 20 years ago, (I had always been thin), and not what a garment looks like in my head (see previous post!), and also nothing like what a Quiz is going to say I am...

I think if I 'HAD TO' label my body a shape, I might be a 'neat hourglass' or maybe 'an accentuated pencil' :P When I wear clothes that are balanced from shoulder to ankles, so that I don't look like my shoulders are so much much much bigger than my ankles, and if I belt my waist, or wear things to show some 'shape through my waist to hip' as Bridgette pointed out to me, I look like a *woman* not a rugby player..!

Can you see in the Before and After pic, Black =/= Skinnier !!!!!!

Please also note, my hair styling makes a big difference too...
The extra bit of length you see in my light blue jeans makes a difference too. Not to mention how the gradation effect of my bootcut jeans makes my legs look a LOT skinner too...

So, yeah, I was really happy with everything I learned about my bodyshape. Bridgette also mentioned how having broad shoulders IS helpful, in the sense that it draws the eyes immediately towards your face and your eyes, which is a GOOD thing... :) But with my short-waist, and overall bodyframe, I need to make sure that my outfit makes me look balanced.

* * *

2. What I Learnt about Accessorizing

I was really curious what I could learn about accessorizing, because my prime concern was how I could stop dressing in my 'chicken outfits' :)

Here are the pictures I sent in to Bridgette prior to our consultation time...

Caption: All my lovely shoes, worn from Spring to Autumn...

Caption: All my bags, big and small~

Caption: All my belts, which haven't been worn until I had my consultation~

Caption: All my scarves, again, which weren't being worn at all...

Caption: Most of my pre-sorted jewelry...

At the time of my consultation with Bridgette, I was still confused and unsure about my Personal Style... And I think that is one of the biggest reasons why I felt so lost about accessorizing. Consequently, this is what gets you INTO that Chicken Outfit Land...

(Back from break; was complete *squirrels* in the ENTP group... :P )

Where were we...
Yes, I had amassed quite a bit of accessories and jewelries, ever since I had done Dressing Your Truth. Working on my Project 333 helped me narrow down which ones I wanted to wear, but somehow, I had ended up dressing in my bland Chicken Outfits...

Because I had always relied on patterns or motifs of my tops when I was younger to 'jazz things up' and mostly because I never really sat down to work out WHAT I wanted to before shopping, what I had ended up in my closet was a complete hogwash...

I had tried many quizzes on these 'Style Personality' too, but again, the results always differed. From the magazine quizzes, I'd be getting Classic or Downtown Girl, then, on blog sites, I'd be getting Street Chic and Urban... Even on that MyPrivateStylist.com quiz, which WAS quite good, I ended up with 2 different ones, Sporty Natural and Casual Attraction. The Kibbe ones were even more confusing. :P

I didn't have a problem with bags and shoes, because I wore them everyday, and they were a 'necessity' any way.

But as mentioned previously, I avoided belts because I was afraid they'd make my waist look big or draw too much attention there, my midriff had grown over the years, I just wanted to hide in my clothes.

The most fascinating part for me, was my scarves. Bridgette reviewed all my stuff, and told me that the reason why my scarves weren't working with my wardrobe is that they were not compatible with my lifestyle and how I dress. In other words, they were too 'traditional' in both pattern and color, and shape. What I needed were more trendy and casual scarves... The ones I had were also the wrong shape; I needed slim long ones, not large squares! :)

Regarding the jewelry selection, after hearing what worked and didn't, and based on the photos I took, she told me she'd send me some suggestions that'd work with what I already have, that were work appropriate. I had collected a lot of nice jewelry, but some were too bold and flashy to be worn for my EFL classroom setting.

Caption: Beautiful and multi-purpose jewelry selection picked out for me by Bridgette Raes! :D

Having seen many of her blogposts, I could see how these necklaces could be worn in many ways with most of my current clothes! Simple and pretty, that can work for so many colors and different outfits!

I tried shopping for these one time, but I decided that since these items would be worn for a long time, I might get these in a slightly higher price range than what I was used to. :)

I did buy one mint/gold necklace though which I am wearing frequently this month! (I'll be doing my October Project 333 post soon!)

So, after talking with Bridgette, I felt good about getting rid of all my scarves, and one skirt which didn't look good on me in ALL of the pictures I took. But it felt great too, that I didn't have to buy a whole lot! I'd just need to find the right necklace or two, and scarves. Most of my other jewelry, bags and shoes were totally fine! Yay~!!!

As covered above re my body shape, and importance of showing my waist rather than hiding it, I think my biggest fear and uncertainty around 'Stylizing' was finally figured out. The little jewelry stuff was NOT the problem really... It was in my overall 'silhouette' I was NOT creating that had made me look so 'student like' and 'bland.' :D

3. How I've Dressed Since Our Consultation

Finally~ We get to some of my post-session outfits pictures! I have a total of 7 different outfits, from end of August to middle of September.

Outfit #1
Caption: Going all classic clean, white blouse with new black skirt, blouse tucked in, WITH A BELT ~!!!

Outfit #2
Caption: I really like this orange belt... but I've realized it's not as cool as it looks. Still, I'm looking a lot slimmer with blouse tucked in and with a belt!

Outfit #3
Caption: One of my FAVES! I never wore it in this combination before, but I felt so comfortable, yet put together... :D

Outfit #4
Caption: As you can see here, I've been wearing black pretty much in ALL of these photos! But with jewelry and different accent colors, it hasn't felt as repetitive...

Outfit #5
Caption: This is actually one of the least successful ones, and I only realized it after I took the photo. Or... I noticed it, but I didn't have time to change... The grey Tshirt works so much better with skinny cargo pants... :)

Outfit #6
Caption: Mixing black cardigan with navy tank... Not sure if that was good, but it was worth a try...

Outfit #7
Caption: Trying out different belts~ Here's the thicker one...

OK~ Well, that's a wrap!!!
I hope you've gotten something useful and inspiring out of this!

It was a long post, so thank you so much for reading it to the end :D

xoxoxo

[Service Review] What I've Learnt From a 'Virtual Closet Editing' Session with Bridgette Raes

Hi, Fashion Readers~!

It's been a while! I'm just back after my Summer Intensives (I work more hours in the Summer...) AND a Korean Thanksgiving holiday. :)

I've continued to work on my Project 333, so I'll do a separate post for the September items. This post though, is a hearty appreciation of everything I've experienced with the Virtual Closet Editing with the wonderful Ms. Bridgette Raes!

* * *
So . . .

I've been following Ms. Raes' blog for a while now. I think I found her twice on two separate occasions. Once, I was blogging for tips on becoming an image consultant and she had done a YouTube video on it long time ago. Then, another time when I was Googling to find some tips on color palette strategies.

The more I've immersed into the various 'fashion & personal style' topics and issues, the more I realized and felt that I was just spinning in circles, chasing my own tail. I think I felt this even more strongly, as I saw how my friends who began with me on the DYT course initially, a couple of years back.

We were still questioning our Personal Style recipes, we were still unsure about our Color Palettes... Where does this all end? I wondered...

Meanwhile though...
I did enjoy and learn gradually about 'Curating' my wardrobe & putting together outfits. I wrestled whether getting Ms. Raes' help would be the long awaited 'Magic Pill' for me and my Quest for 'THAT' Image Thang that's been haunting me ALL my life...

And after many weeks of mulling and clicking and closing her Services Page, I decided to request a Skype consultation (the preliminary one) to see if all my wondering was even necessary :)

Well, thankfully, that was a really good decision!!

* * *

Ms. Raes offers two types of Virtual Consultations, and so I asked her which of the two I should request, and what each entailed. And whether she had experience working with Asian women. Luckily, she cleared up all my 'nagging Nellies' and we agreed to do the 'Virtual Closet Editing' which IS the recommended First Step for most of her clients.

Let's see...

So, looking back, I think working with Bridgette took about 2~3 weeks total, with distinct stages...

After our agreement, she sent me a Questionnaire, which covers my body measurements, lifestyle needs, some questions on colors, and some past experiences and style preferences, as well as some fabric and laundry related questions.

It took about half an hour I think to answer it.

* * *

Bridgette actually told me during our first Skype (preliminary one) that I was a Winter! :D AND she gifted me a Winter Palette that not only had the palette colors, but lots of suggestions for color combinations for outfits.

That was so wonderful; I had been so torn and lost doing DYT, ended up shopping for items that were not the best for my style, which led me to doing a local color draping, which added even more discrepancies and confusion/conflicts.

My initial typing by CT was Type 2 from some of the photos I sent to her. Then it was Type 4, after a 20 minute Skype chat with CT. But my color draping came out Striking Autumn. Worse, and ever more confusing were these issues: a) I can't wear silver in the Winter, so Type 4 didn't sustain itself for me, b) most of the muddied and browned colors in the Autumn colors did not look good on me, AND c) even if I wore the skin enhancing Autumn colors, it seemed to fight a lot with my Black Asian Hair...

THANKFULLY, Bridgette's approach and 'verdict' worked really well with my 'Fashion Philosophy' and 'Needs'...

a) The Winter Palette she sent me included a lot of 'Universal' and 'Neutral' colors. I LOVE wearing beige and gray and they are both allowed!
b) There are no metals 'Restriction' :)
c) Honoring my Hair Color has always been the Smart Thing to Do, IRL. So there.

* * *

The next 2 assignments prior to our Skype Session were to...

a) send in 'Ideal Outfits' via email OR Pinterest.
I had fun choosing these. And knowing how much of an investment this was, I really thought long and hard (for a Aries/Gemini/Pisces) and sent in ONLY those that TRULY met my aesthetic preferences. You can view the selection here: http://www.pinterest.com/jeeyoona/my-fave-styles-to-share-with-bridgette-raes/

The two that really were my IDEALS were these two though:

something a little 'lady like' and more 'feminine'

something practical for every day in the city, urban & practical

b) Send in pictures of myself wearing the outfits. But to photograph them from front, side, and back. It took me the weekend to do this properly. But I learnt SO MUCH doing this! I highly recommend this technique to anyone having the 'Wardrobe Blues' and feels like their wardrobe is not supporting them!!

I have a full length mirror that I use everyday, but this exercise was INVALUABLE. People don't really see how they are in their outfits... Mirrors can only do so much! Your eyes go from face to chest to legs when you see yourself, and it doesn't allow you to take in your OVERALL shape and physique!

* * *

OK. So. Now, I have some *embarrassing* stuff to share...
I requested for Bridgette's help because, I was feeling the total BLAH with my wardrobe, with my Project 333 outfits. I liked the ease of wearing pre-chosen selection of stuff... But this still wasn't the IMAGE I wanted for myself.

Daily, I began to feel more and more like, Hmmm... Why is it, that I look MORE and MORE like a STUDENT???

I'm a mid 30-something 'WOMAN' - I look like a highschool student, preparing for exams, (aka NERD)... I was so far from sophistication that I had wanted. SOMETHING was amiss. It was horribly going down hill...!

So, as embarrassing as it is, since I know this could happen to YOU or someone you know, I'm sharing my 'Chicken Outfifts' (this reference comes from Ms. Rae's YouTube video) here:

Chicken Outfit #1

*FACEPALM*
This is me wearing my 'supposedly slimming' BLACK sheer blouse...
I swear to you, when this blouse hangs on my hanger, it looks so nice and feminine, it's like you can feel the BREEZE through this outfit...
I thought that because the blouse is black it would be slimming, and because it's sheer, it'd add more 'femininity' and less of a 'weighty/heavy' feeling of black.

Seeing this ON MY BODY was a TRUE AWAKENING... I felt like, oh no! Is this how I really look INSIDE the blouse???

Chicken Outfit #2

This one doesn't make me look AS BAD as the above one... At least, I don't look like a rubgy player :) But as Bridgette pointed it out to me, it's a good base, that sorely needs accessorizing. (My wordage, not hers. She was blunt with me a couple of times, which I actually liked and found helpful to hear. We both have Capricorn strong in our astrology btw! And I admired her style from the videos, so I knew there was good chance she'd be a good stylist for me!)

Growing up, I wasn't allowed to 'own' my beauty or my body. All my focus had to be geared towards getting into a 'good university' so the only way I used to spice up my outfits were to wear tops that had designs or patterns on them. I never really learnt to do my hair nicely, or to experiment and explore different ways to style my clothes, accessories, or jewelry.

Having said that, I was never into frills and laces any way... But you know, a woman's body goes through stages. I have been a tallish, skinny bitch in my teens and twenties. It was from the year I turned 28 that my hips and butt started to store fat in them, and initially my waistline was still nice and visible, and there was no pot belly to speak of.

So, I guess that added to never having to 'worry' or 'LEARN' how to dress for a non-skinny body... As the years added on, so did my fats... SAD FACT OF LIFE. Unless I change my 'sedentary potato' ways, this body isn't gonna get skinnier back to its Glory Days...

Moving on... :D

Chicken Outfit #3

Right .
Someone hire me now, for that part time job somewhere! I look like the veritable 'Student' Archetype Anonymous... White blouse x Dark denim jeans straight cut . Yeah, don't do this . I'm telling ya . Stop it RIGHT NOW . XD !!!

(There are some other really terrible chicken outfits, but I'm hoping to work in Fashion related field, so I am gonna have to save some grace here... *wink, wink*)

* * *

The first batch of these Chicken Outfits confirmed my belief that, Oh sh*t, I REALLY DO NEED HELP!

But I still had Sunday to work with my existing wardrobe... So I started playing, and came up with some 'similacra' for my Ideal Outfits...

Example of a Mimic Outfit

As you can see, I do not have a gray jacket, but I do have a gray shirt blouse, a wide belt, and slimming jeans for my legs.

Compared with above, what adds to my style here is putting my hair up in a messy way, but it does AMAZING for my 'sleepy jawline' and helps visually especially from the side and back. (See why you need to photography yourself, ladies?)

I never belted my clothes prior to this consultation with Bridgette, because I was scared I was going to draw attention to my swelling-belly. Boy, could I have been more wrong! XD

So, I intend to do this more often...
Seeing what I might be able to create using what I already have!

This totally worked! Just following the steps Bridgette instructed me to follow!
AMAZEBALLS!!!

* * *

Where were we...

So, yes, I sent in lots and lots of these outfit pictures. I used a tripod to take the pictures, and put 3 pictures on each Power Point Slide. And turned it into a PDF and sent it to Bridgette.

I can't showcase all of my outfits...
But I did get more creative with my styling, with each photo & styling session! I think I must have done 4 in total...

Playing with Belt Colors

Here are two outfits that are identical in styling, all except for the belts. I guess both work, but the latter is a lot more slimming from the side... :)

Also, while the former looks more 'creative' or 'casual,' the latter feels more 'cohesive' and 'put together.'

* * *
Necklace Option

Here are two pictures showing an outfit combination Bridgette thought was really good for me. I even tucked in my tank tee here, which is not something I was used to doing...
We both agreed that while having a necklace might be an idea, this particular necklace (which I never wear any way) is NOT the one for me... Too traditional and matronly. We ruled out ALL of my scarves by the way, for the same reason... They didn't go with my outfits... Now I can see where I was going wrong... :) !!!

* * *

But in the end, the best outfits that came of all this trying on and playing 'Shop My Closet' were these *gems*:

My 'Signature Style' Outfit - of the Bunch :D

Bridgette agreed that of ALL the outfits, this was the most ME.
And I'd have to agree. I felt most at ease wearing this.
I immediately had a smile when I chose this Tshirt and my cargo pants...
I even wore a red lipstick, just because I felt like it.

It needs a little jewelry, but this is a good outfit for expressing myself.
It's functional, it's understated, it's urbane.

Weather Proof Outfit - Ready for the Monsoon Season!

Waisted in Black~!
Here's another outfit that Bridgette and I agreed was a good option for me. If the above outfit felt like a sort of a DKNY-feel, this one felt more like a Prada-ish feel.

She told me that the waist line being pulled in makes this outfit work, compared with my previous sheer black blouse... that added pounds to my figure!

The Casual Attraction - My Favorite Tshirt Graphics ^__^

This is my 'casual' look that I threw in at the last minute. I just love the geometric pattern on this Tshirt! I think this outfit is more CK-style than the other two...

I like how 'light' this feels, and relaxed yet not slob-like...

* * *

So, after I sent in the outfits to Bridgette, she sent me comments for each outfit in the form of post-its in my PDF file. :) Gotta love 21st century technology!

But she reminded me that more will be discussed for solutions and suggestions during our Skype. Her main commentary for my outfits were that my color combinations were not helping me much.

I did send in some clothes that were kind of 'clashing' in colors or 'too light and washed looking' for my 'Winter' coloring...

We scheduled for our Skype session, but you know what...? I was ALREADY dressing MUCH BETER... each day for my job! I was belting all my outfits, and some days, I remembered to wear my hair up.

I couldn't believe I could wear belts this often! I tried out like 5~6 belts that week! And I looked a lot slimmer, like magic~!! ^___________^ VVV

* * *

Wow, it is getting late...
It's almost 5am again! Better force myself to bed now...

I'll have to return to give you what transpired during the Skype chat (mostly learned about my body type and learned options for accessorizing), as well as what Bridgette sent me AFTER our Skype session.

Aight, my Reader... Thank you for tuning in!
Talk to you soon~!!

Love and Gratitude for your Readership,

How 5 Tops, 5 Bottoms, and 3 Tank Tees Can Give Me a Wealth of Options for a Month of Work Outfits (Project 333 Insights)

Hi all~!!

I'm getting rather obsessive with my outfit maths!
Here are my August's 13 items, giving me a total of 75 outfits!

The 13 items are:
5 Tops
  • Black blouse
  • Gray shirt
  • White blouse
  • Red cardigan
  • Blue-orange checkered blouse
3  Tank Tees
  • Black tank tee
  • White tank tee
  • Red-white striped tank tee
5 Bottoms
  • Black pencil skirt
  • Ivory skirt
  • Dark denim jeans
  • White cotton skinny
  • Beige cotton skinny

Here are the fabulous 75 outfit combinations, ONLY using the 13 items!

1. Sheer Black Blouse (15 Combinations)
  • Sheer Black Blouse x Black Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Sheer Black Blouse x Red/White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Sheer Black Blouse x White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms

2. Gray Shirt (an Whoppin' 20 combinations~!!)
  • Gray Shirt x 5 Bottoms
  • Gray Shirt x Black Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Gray Shirt x White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Gray Shirt x Red/White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms

3. Red Cardigan (15 Combinations)
  • Red Cardigan x Red/White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Red Cardigan x Black Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Red Cardigan x White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms

4. White Blouse (15 Combinations)
  • White Blouse x Black Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • White Blouse x Red/White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • White Blouse x White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms

5. Blue-Orange Blouse (10 Combinations)
  • Blue-Orange Blouse x Black Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms
  • Blue-Orange Blouse x White Tank Tee x 5 Bottoms

I didn't get into the shoes, bags, and jewelry here; just the outfit combinations. Doing this takes time, but it is such a *mind blowing* exercise! I used to shop $200 easy in one shopping trip, thinking I had to get my hands on the latest trendy items in order to feel like I had ENOUGH to wear and enjoy.

As many of our beloved and respected gurus teach us, having more does not equal more options.

To illustrate how crucial *coordinating* makes ALL the difference, please compare my numbers 2 and number 5 outfit combinations.

Number 2 were examples of outfit combinations I could create based on my Gray Shirt and 3 tank tees. Unlike my sheer blouses which CANNOT be worn without tank tees underneath, the Gray Shirt gives me 20 combinations, which is 5 more than the rest of the work tops. This is because the Gray Shirt can be worn without tank tees, AND it can also be worn WITH the tank tees!

Compare that to my Number 5 combos. Here, my Blue-Orange Blouse clashes with the Red/White striped tank tee, so it immediately knocks off 5 combinations. Hence only 10 combinations.

I know that given how a lot of my chosen clothes this month are black/white/beige, some of the outfit combinations seem to feel 'alike' in some ways.

These outfit combinations were a necessary step for me to visually & tangibly appreciate the vastness of choices available to me. It's easy to think that my brain can compute all of these combinations, but that is a huge misstep. And one that used to cost me $$$ in my Shopaholic years!

Given how women can do their hairstyle & makeup differently, wear jewelry, and switch out bags and shoes, for any given work month, a well chosen cluster of 13 pieces can definitely go a long way for your Project 333!

OK~
That's all for tonight, beautiful radiant beings!

Namaste . . .

xoxo
